The Runaways, critically acclaimed but never appreciated, formed in Hollywood in 1975 with the help of music svengali/producer Kim Fowley and became the first female rock and roll band to really impress record buyers and musicians alike - though more so today than then! Live In Japan, originally unreleased in the UK or US and only available from imports, was recorded in 1977 during the girls' sold-out arena tour! By that time, The Runaways had become genuine superstars in Japan and this album, boasting superb sound quality (by 70s standards) and explosive, unadorned versions of "You Drive Me Wild", "Cherry Bomb", "California Paradise" and other hard rock gems, only proves that it serves their worth. With the same line-up, just before Jackie and then Cherie were to leave the band, the girls were in top form, making this one of the best live rock albums of the 70s! With the exception of a handful of bootlegs, Live in Japan is the only documentation of the Runaways on stage! In their day, bands like Blondie and The Ramones respected them and today bands like Courtney Love, Bikini Kill, L7, The Donnas and Babes In Toyland cite them as a major influence.
