The album was well received by critics. AllMusic gave the album 4.5 stars out of 5, stating, "This is one of the best live metal albums of all time." The album was commercially successful and charted at number 48 on the Billboard 200. The album features live versions of songs from Black Sabbath' first four albums as well as the song "Neon Knights", which originally appeared on the album Heaven and Hell. The album was remastered and re-released in 2010 as part of the box set Black Sabbath : The Complete Studio Albums 1970-1978.
